Michelle SommersMICHELLE SOMMERS is an accomplished surf instructor who specializes in teaching women how to surf through individual lessons and weekend camps in Ocean City, Maryland. An avid outdoor runner and cyclist, Michelle did not start surfing until her mid-20s. When she attended a women’s surf camp on Oahu, she realized the importance of being able to focus in a comfortable, relaxed environment surrounded by women. From this experience, she’s made it one of her primary goals to help other women fulfill their ambitions and pursue new experiences.

Inspired by a friend who left a full-time job to do what she loved most, Michelle left a successful career to be a full-time mom and began Sommers Surf Lessons.  While her lessons and camps cater to everyone, she focuses on encouraging women to push their limits, face any fears of the ocean they may have, and enjoy their experience.  To prove that age is never an issue, she recently helped a 63-year old student ride a wave during her first class.

Michelle SommersMichelle’s surf lessons teach the essentials of safety, etiquette, and technique, and she offers alternative training options for women who can’t surf every day or who want to elevate their fitness levels for surfing, including running, biking and yoga. As a busy mother of two active boys, ages 3 and 5, she understands the time constraints of motherhood and the need for women to create time for themselves. To support this belief, she organizes free surf sessions and also has a group where local moms can enjoy a surf session while taking turns playing with each other’s children.

Michelle is passionate about the ocean environment and keeping the beaches clean and safe. She volunteers for a local marine animal stranding organization, MERR Institute, and helps transport injured or sick animals to rescue facilities. She’s also an active member of her local Surfrider Foundation and is involved in her husband’s bicycle shop business, Fenwick Islander Bicycle Shop, organizing bike rides, fitness programs, and helping with rentals.

2011 GOALS:

  • To challenge bigger surf and exceed current level of skill and mental limits.
  • Incorporate Stand Up Paddle into training program and offer lessons to women.
  • Incorporate more yoga practice into weekly training.
  • To set an example that will encourage family members, friends, and class participants to pursue healthier lifestyles.
