The Relay: Not For the Faint of Heart

by Team Athleta • May 17th, 2010 • Category: Inside Athleta, Team Athleta

Penny & Her Daughter Corinna - Mother Daughter Athletes! On April 30th and May 1st, Team Athleta completed our 8th year participating in the 199 mile Relay from Calistoga to Santa Cruz (we had two teams, 24 people). We raised $1,971 for Organs “R” Us!

It’s always hard for me to find the words to explain the Relay experience. The first thing I would like to say is… what a fantastic group of people! This event is a success because of the team of people that come together to go through this adventure—it’s probably the most taxing weekend of the year.

This event is not for the faint at heart; it stretches you on a physical, emotional and mental level. We had Paul and Dan (two first timers) running an additional leg due to illness. We had Lori agree at the 11th hour to join us at 5am to fill in for Bonnie who came down with the flu the day before. We had Mike and Tim come across the country to be a part of Team Athleta.

But I have to say, it’s in that moment when I force myself out of the van at 4am (after being up all night), exhausted, wanting to be in my own bed warm and cozy, that the experience is most meaningful to me. I ran under the moon light, next to a beautiful lake with my music playing and my legs feeling very strong—the best they have ever felt in 8 years. And there is my team looking out for me, encouraging me, sharing this moment with me. It’s something you can’t buy! Oh what a feeling!! Thanks team!

Also, our volunteers Lisa, Myra, Ann, Triana and Lynn showed up for their five hour shifts and brought their team spirit to help all the teams. This event doesn’t happen without our volunteers. Thank you all so very much!!

It is my hope that everyone who participated had a great experience! There is no doubt in my mind that at some point during this weekend, you may have questioned what the heck you were thinking, but when all is said and done you were glad you did it!

Peace,

Penny
