F-A-M-I-L-Y Principles on the R-O-A-D: Xterra Miami
by Jade Gianakopoulos • Apr 23rd, 2010 • Category: TriathlonMy last blog The F-A-M-I-L-Y Principles suggested ways to harmonize fitness with motherhood. Racing is also a fun way to bring your family together for adventures and recreation. The Xterra Miami off-road triathlon in March led my family of four into the famous hustle and bustle of Miami, Florida. Right in the midst of this cultural melting pot of hotels, restaurants, and shops we found the largest urban park in Florida. Oleta River State Park, one of the area’s greatest resources for eco-recreation, possesses 15 miles of mountain bike trails, a beach, salt water lagoon and river. We became immersed in Florida’s indigenous natural world.
Oleta State Park’s serene and warm lagoon made for a pleasant race day swim. The mountain bike trails presented super fun obstacles like giant gnarly roots, drop-offs, mud and sand. I loved the long and windy bridges. Three water crossings on the run leg (yes, water crossings on the run) put the “X” in Xterra. One crossing included 50 yards of swimming in very deep water – with running shoes, a hat, and sunglasses on. We were offered a rope, so I pulled myself across while kicking with my light mesh running shoes (no socks for this event). The homestretch sprint took us down the beach and into the finish line, all while hundreds of families enjoyed their day at the park. That is what it’s all about.
Here are ways that you can incorporate racing into family life—and your budget—as you hit the R-O-A-D:
R – RECREATION. Bring bikes or other ways for the rest of the family to exercise. Off-road triathlons are ideal race settings because they usually take place in state parks where your family, including your pet, can explore and play while you are in the race.
O – ORGANIZATION. Plan your races in conjunction with other family trips. Xterra Miami occurred at the start of a Spring Break vacation we had already planned. Preparing your family’s activities and needs is just as important as your own race day preparation. Bring supplies to deal with any weather or scenario, including flashlights, first aid kit, chairs, blankets, and extra clothing. Always bring food and water, since not all races provide vending.
A – ACTIVITIES. Games to maximize family time on the road are as simple as “I Spy” or singing songs. Movies, books, and music bring valuable quiet time. Give each family member a “job” during the race to help them share in your sense of accomplishment at the finish line. My oldest daughter, Alexandra, loves to be my cheerleader by making posters and ringing her cow bell while her sister Isabella manages the stopwatch to keep track of my times.
D – DRIVE. Driving is a major money-saver. We avoided over $2000 in costs of airfare, bike transport, and rental car. Off-road triathlons usually provide the most affordable option of camping in a state park. At Oleta State Park, you can bring your pet and it only costs between $12 and $38 nightly to camp.
The best race is one where you can share success with your family. You will create lasting memories while inspiring them to achieve their goals. You might even watch your children pass this on to your grandchildren someday. I would know because I remember getting excited to watch my dad finish marathons.
Go ahead and register for that race now and hit the road with your family!

AWESOME! Thanks for the wonderful tips. Our kids are still quite young to travel for race events, but we are already making plans for the years to come :)
