From a life coaching perspective, each season provides a natural flow for us and the body intuitively knows how to follow that flow — if we can learn to tune in and listen. In fall, nature models to us to prepare for the winter months. As the leaves start to drop off the trees, you may want to think about what you would like to drop off this season. It may be an old behavior or belief that no longer fits with who you are, a dysfunctional relationship or friendship that is draining you, eating habits that do not support your body, or letting go of how you currently view your world.

Take some time to think about things that would be worth dropping off in your life this fall, to help you be happier and more successful. If you’re like most people, some things will come to mind immediately. Consider all your relationships, ways of being, beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, perceptions, habits, and material things such as clutter and junk. Here are some areas you may want explore: Health, career, family, friendships, love and romance, finances, spiritual life. List what comes to you now.

Here is a little process from Helen Attridge, Life Coach for Womens Quest, to help you identify what you need to drop off and eliminate in your life…

  1. Consider a week in your life, and log your activities from the time you get up until the time you go to bed.
  2. Identify what’s draining you and what’s nourishing you; do this in half hour increments.
  3. When you’ve completed your log, determine what activities should be dropped off because they don’t serve you. Put a check beside those that have added to your life and given you positive energy, and cross off those that are draining and need to be dropped off or changed in some way.
  4. Set your intentions and make a plan to move forward.

Please share some of what you’ve discovered in the comments — what do you intend to change or shed as the trees change color and shed their leaves? You’ll be amazed how putting it out in the virtual universe can motivate you to take the next step and act on your intentions!

Early this evening I took a walk in the woods with my devoted & loving dog Slick. Right away I noticed the crisp air with a bit of chill. It didn’t bother me much , it was quite refreshing. The larch trees are starting to turn, as are all the grasses and bushes. As we walked I noticed how much more of peace I am. Just Slick and I in the woods. The ground was covered in pine needles. I started to ponder the thought of actually trying to teach this quiet, peaceful state of being in such a busy, hurried & techno world to my children. Teaching the importance of quiet, reflection & breath. I constantly tell my 6 year old little girl to breath when she gets stressed. So my goal this fall is drag all precious 4 kids to the living room for yoga. I may not get all the peace I am used to when I practice myself. But I think this is such a valuable lesson to teach . I may be rewarded in ways I may have never imagined.

Kc, I love your goal. Nature has such a way of instilling tranquility. Maybe in the spring you can get your kids outside for yoga!

My goal: Over the years I’ve gotten pretty good at eliminating what isn’t serving my life. As I transition through life’s challenges and realize that time is tick-ticking, it’s a huge motivator to get focused. Not always easy, but yoga has helped me learn to get through the difficulty with greater ease. Amazing what you can endure by cultivating breath awareness.

My goal is not so much about letting go, except when it comes to letting go of what’s holding me back from deepening my yoga practice. Mostly that comes down to prioritizing my mind/body/spirit health. I recently signed on at a studio that offers a huge range of classes. I’m excited about trying them all and finding what resonates. In deepening my practice, I want to work on back bends (my nemesis — got any advice?). Last year I focused on handstands, and kept a Yoga Journal photo on my fridge to help me visualize the goal. It worked! Granted, I’m still against the wall, but getting up there was a huge tipping point (pun intended). :)

Thank you Colleen and Helen for sharing your insight and expertise!
