Hooked on Triathlons

About two years ago, I decided that my sedentary lifestyle at age 41 was not healthy, and I started training to run a 5K. In 2007, I completed my first 5K in 48 minutes… pretty slow, but I felt I had accomplished much when I crossed that finish line. I continued to run, but was seeing no improvements in time, plus my weight was still creeping upward. It was time to get serious and get busy! I joined Jill B. Nimble multi-sport training program and began training for the Danskin Women’s Triathlon. I also developed a healthier eating regime. The results have been exceptional–I completed my first sprint triathlon in 2008 and one month later completed another. I am hooked on triathlons! My goal is to complete a half Ironman before I am 45 and an Ironman by age 50.
My run time is down to a 10:30 to 11 minute mile from that initial 15-16 minute mile, and I have lost 41 pounds. I actually like how I look in Athleta clothes now! I have more energy, am healthy and fit, and feel a deep sense of accomplishment. This journey has spilled over to other aspects of my life as well. After gaining confidence in my ability to attain fitness goals that I have set for myself, I have decided to start my own writing and editing business.
Exercise and fitness have truly been transformational in my life! I love getting others excited about gaining endurance, strength and health in their life as well, and enjoy hearing about others experiences with physical activity.
Good luck in your journeys!

You are a wonderful inspiration Renee. I too am loving triathlons and agree with the discipline and confidence spilling over into other aspects of our lives. This weekend is my first ever Xterra World Championships in Maui and I am feeling such a zest for life felt as never before. I am 39! It’s never too late. Aloha, Judy

Congratulations. I hope to get back to triathlons by the spring of 2009. Your mention of the Danskin series really made me smile. I absolutely loved doing that race. I loved that there were tricked-out Pinarello bicycles and that there were old Schwinns with baskets. I loved that we came in all shapes and sizes. Mostly I loved the rich atmosphere of support. I wish you the best.
