Traveling Pants on Mt. Bromo

Greetings from Mt. Bromo in East Java!
The foggy pics below are from the morning crossing of the Great Sand Sea, the large crater you cross to get to Mt. Bromo. It’s amazing, and seems to be constantly covered in cloud in the early mornings, which burns away by midday. Walking in this would be entirely too eerie, so I’m glad we cheated and took the jeeps.
My camera can’t describe how beautiful it is to see the red line of dawn pierce the darkness in a single straight line as the earth spins forward and the sun begins to illuminate the gorgeous volcanoes of Bartok, Bromo and Semeru. I know that these are extremely dangerous things, but for that moment, their beauty kept me from thinking of that and all I could think of was that these mighty, majestic openings of the earth seemed to be gods, emerging from clouds below and at will, letting off puffs of cloud vapor, and holding destruction and creation in the palms of their hands. I know…drama queen description? Well, it sure seemed apt when I was staring into the mouth of Bromo, so close the vapor dampened my hair. It also made me wish I had learned a lot more about vulcanology in science class besides just that experiment with baking soda and vinegar.
The Javanese often give offerings to the volcanoes and it’s not uncommon to see them trekking up to throw in flowers to try to keep them appeased. I’m grateful all was calm and serene during my visit.
