The Relay

What has 36 legs, 48 feet, and runs all night under a full moon? Our very own Team Athleta!
On April 19th and 20th, Athleta employees participated in The Relay, a 199 mile run from the Napa Valley town of Calistoga, across the Golden Gate Bridge at midnight, and ending at the beach in Santa Cruz. We had 2 teams, each comprised of 12 members who ran three legs in rotation. The 36 legs through 36 cities are 3 to 8.9 miles and rated from easy to very hard, allowing runners to select a route that matches their strengths.
When Team Athleta first started running The Relay in 2003, the event was seen as a great bonding experience for a group of athletically-minded coworkers. But it didn’t take long for everyone to appreciate the real meaning of the experience — to raise awareness and donations for Organs ‘R’ Us.
“Before participating in The Relay, I hadn’t thought about donating my organs. Now my family knows if anything happens to me, I want my healthy organs donated to someone in need,” says Penny, a former body builder, longtime triathlete, and Athleta’s ringleader for The Relay.
When you put a group of coworkers together in a van for 36 hours, you’re bound to have an adventure. We’ll spare the details (as Penny says, “What happens in the van stays in the van”), but hope you enjoy these photos from the event.

Fantastic accomplishment! And you all look fabulous in your Athleta outfits!
Wow! I’ve always wanted to do something like this, and I even tried to put a team together for Hood to Coast. You’ve inspired me to get on my friends again to make it happen.
