The Fair Trade Difference

Most of the people who make Athleta clothes are women. Which is kind of fitting (pardon the pun) when you think about it. It’s also what drove us, back in January, to partner with Fair Trade USA to create more than 40 Fair Trade Certified styles. Because our mission is to empower women and girls to achieve their limitless potential. All women and girls, including the women making our tanks, tights and tees. Today, we’re excited to announce that we’ve committed to create an additional 230 Fair Trade Certified styles by the end of the year, for a total of 270.

So, what is Fair Trade Certified?

Fair Trade is a thoughtful model of shopping that prioritizes people and the planet. It makes sure your everyday purchases were made according to rigorous social, environmental, and economic standards. It ensures that people making Fair Trade Certified goods work in safe conditions, protect the environment, build sustainable livelihoods, and earn additional money to empower and uplift their communities.

Every time you buy from Athleta’s Fair Trade Collection, we pay an additional premium directly back to the people who made the tank, pant, or bra through the Community Development Fund.

Collectively, the workers decide how to spend the money to better their community.

They can opt for child care centers, cooking facilities, healthcare services, scholarships for kids or even a monetary bonus. It’s entirely up to them to decide. That means they increase their standard of living on their own terms.

For a product to earn Fair Trade certification, the factory in which it’s created must adhere to rigorous social, environmental and economic standards. That includes promoting sustainable livelihoods for workers, preserving fragile ecosystems, and building transparent supply chains.

We are proud to further our mission of empowering women and their communities by being a part of the Fair Trade Difference, a campaign lead by Fair Trade USA that highlights how your everyday purchases have more power than you might realize.

We stand together with other companies like Green Mountain Coffee, west elm, Tcho Chocolate, Honest Tea and Kashi who have made Fair Trade a priority.

Fair Trade helps make lives around the world better and allows those purchasing the items the opportunity to vote with their dollars for a better world.

Visit the Fair Trade Shopping Guide to show your support for meaningful purchasing, and shop Athleta’s Fair Trade collection to help improve the quality of life for women and their communities, around the world.
