We caught up with Athleta swim designer and competitive swimmer Erin Hartman, who shares the inspiration behind her designs for the new Tri-ssential Collection.
What was the inspiration behind your designs?
The Tri-ssential Collection was really inspired by athletes! I was a competitive swimmer in college and I’d often train with Triathletes. I realized how big of a need there was for true performance suits that are feminine and inspiring. I wanted the suits to look as good as they perform, whether you are swimming, running, cycling or even playing volleyball on the beach.
How is this collection different than anything else in the market?
This collection offers a full range of options for any body type. Whether you want full support and coverage, or a pull-on sporty halter top with removable pads, you have options to mix and match. The shortie is also really special in that there are so many sneaky pockets to hold things in! If you are heading out to the beach or surfing, you could hold your key in your back pocket. There are little details in each of the styles that are really purposeful for all active women.
Did you wear test this? If so, what did you learn or change after that?
I did wear test this group! We also had a few others wear them as well. We made many great fit improvements to ensure that many different body types felt good and that the details like top support, coverage, and even the pockets felt just right.
What is the most unique aspect of the Tri-ssential Collection?
I think what is truly special about these styles is the versatility they offer. I wanted a suit that I could work out in, but also look good on the beach. There is nothing better than having one suit do it all!
Which life experiences have framed your approach to swimwear design?
I have been a competitive swimmer since I was about five, so have always been in the water for as long as I can remember. I also was a State Champion in swimming during college and even played Water Polo. I feel like my path to becoming a designer was truly born out of my passion for swimming and wanting to constantly improve the sport through suits. In swimming there is literally nothing other than you and your suit that hits the water every morning! You think about what you are wearing every practice and how it feels each and every stroke in the pool.
