Share Your Light: Fostering Fearlessness In Our Girls

It’s never too early — or too late – to raise girls to be fearless and adventuresome. Help your daughter embody fearlessness by implementing these simple practices.

Let Her Fail

Failure is scary. And yet, the fear of failing is usually worse than the failure itself. It’s nearly impossible to be fearless if we’re unwilling to make mistakes. Many girls strive to be “perfect”, which keeps them from expressing their unique light. Accepting the fact that your daughter will experience failure from time to time and letting it happen (even if you see it coming) is one of the best things you can do for her.

Helpful Tip: Make time for a “Mistake Day”; a day where making mistakes is the goal. Wear your clothes inside-out and backwards. Go bowling and throw every ball into the gutter. Eat dessert before dinner. Your daughter will be surprised at how fun making mistakes can be and may feel differently about making mistakes in the future.

Taking Risks Leads to Adventure

Encourage your daughter to take risks. She will be amazed by the adventures that show up when she’s willing to step outside of her comfort zone!

Helpful Tip: Trying something new and feeling excited about it helps children associate taking safe risks with positive experiences. Try a new food, set up a first-time play date, or have a dance party in public. Do something adventurous together that will stretch your daughter.

Resilience Requires a Growth Mindset

Teaching your daughter to see opportunity in all experiences will set her up for a joyful and fulfilling life. Being open, staying positive and having a growth mindset are key to resilience. Help your daughter understand the difference between “helpful” and “hurtful” thoughts. We can train our inner voice to be kind and positive, which allows us to bounce back from challenging situations and focus on achieving our goals.

Helpful Tip: If you hear your daughter say something unkind about herself or another, ask “Is that a helpful (positive) or hurtful (negative) thought?” Help her turn her words into a helpful statement.

Being Brave in Her Own Skin

Your daughter deserves to feel brave and confident in her own skin. What lights your daughter up? Let her do more of that and celebrate whatever it is. Reflect to your daughter how incredible she is. Help her fall in love with herself.

Helpful Tip: Your daughter will boost her self-confidence immediately by standing in the mirror and telling herself whatever positive message she needs to hear. (“I love you. I trust you. You can do this!”). Here are some other easy ways to help build your daughter’s self-confidence.

These tips are inspired by my own journey and the girls and women I work with. I hope that they inspire you to be a bit more brave in your own life and to shine your unique light. You being you will inspire your daughter be her fearless self more than anything else!
