National Friendship Day: 5 Reasons You Need a Fitness Buddy

August 7, 2016

Solo workouts are great for “me time,” but what about the days you skip a workout because it’s too hot, too cold, or you simply can’t find the energy after work?

It’s easy to fall into the ‘I’ll start tomorrow’ rabbit hole. As a fitness consultant, clients often say if I hadn’t shown up for their session they would have skipped their workout. If you don’t have a trainer knocking on your door, it’s time to buddy up! A workout buddy can give you that much needed boost and help keep you accountable.

5 ways a fitness buddy will help you maximize your routine:

YOU’LL FEEL MORE MOTIVATED
Everyone has those days where a planned workout gets taken over by a rabbit hole of Facebook or Netflix. On days when you feel less motivated, you can turn to your workout buddy for a pep talk to get you moving. Same thing goes for the days she wants to play hooky –you can be that motivation for her. Teamwork makes the dream work!

YOU’LL LEARN NEW WORKOUTS
Whether you’re a beginning athlete or you’ve been training for years, everyone can learn something new. You and your workout buddy can teach each other routines, or together, you can try different group exercise classes. It’s way less intimidating to try something new when you have a friend by your side.

YOU’LL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE
When you and your workout buddy set goals together, you can hold each other accountable in and out of the gym. Whether you’re tracking your progress, planning grocery lists, or reaching for the next level, a cheerleader by your side will help you stay on track with your goals.

YOU’LL GET A BOOST OF POSITIVITY
Everyone can get caught up in negative self talk on days we don’t feel our best. Your workout buddy can help take you out of that mindset by giving you positive reinforcement. And with a pal by your side, you’ll be too busy having a blast to put yourself down.

YOU’LL HAVE MORE F-U-N!
This is what it’s all about! Working out should not be a punishment. It’s supposed to be a fun way to do good for your body and mind. So smile, laugh, be goofy and share those moments with a friend!

I’d love to have a workout buddy, but I still haven’t found that one person who is willing to step it up a notch like I am. I just started Shaun T’s Focus T25 and it’s a killer workout, but pretty much every person I know aren’t up to it yet. So for now, I consider my workouts as my me time until I find someone who’s ready to give it everything they’ve got.
