Meet Model-Athlete Shanna Farrar

Mom. Trainer. Athlete. Coach. Entrepreneur. Woman.

Now that Shanna is a mother to a baby girl, each of these roles mean even more to her.

She began her career as a student-athlete, earning a soccer scholarship to university, and later continued in semi-professional leagues. Her passion for sports lead to her career as a personal trainer and business owner of 360Fit, a fitness studio in New York City. In 2012, her fitness journey led her to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she began offering beach fitness classes and online personal training, with a specialization in pre- and post-natal fitness.

We caught up with the multitasking mother & model-athlete to get her take on fitness, fun and Funky Cold Medina.

Q: What’s your go-to workout right now?
A: For the past three months, I have become a boxing fanatic. Each and every workout I am left drenched in sweat and it is a great for me to build back core strength and toning after having my baby. I’m big into maximizing my time with my workouts, and boxing lets me do that – plus I get to hit stuff so that’s always added fun!

Q: Are you a rise-and-shine-and-workout kind of girl or do you prefer training in the dark?
A: Definitely rise-and-shine!

I remember my dad always said, “live a life where you just can’t wait to wake up in the morning.”

I guess that saying stuck with me because most days I like to see the sun rise. When I get my workout done in the morning, I feel so much more energized and ready for my day.

Q: Name your top three favorite foods.
A: A really good mango. Dark chocolate (any dark chocolate), and I get overly excited for cobb salad with vinaigrette, minus the bacon.

Q: What’s the one item in your gym bag you can’t live without?
A: My water bottle. I sweat a lot during my workouts so I have to have a water bottle nearby at all times!

Q: If you could master anything, what would it be?
A: I would want to master a martial arts like karate or capoeira. I love the discipline and mind/body conditioning that goes into martial arts.

Q: What’s on your workout playlist right now?
A: Usually I have an old school hip-hop playlist going during my workouts where I have to mutter under my breath all the words to Salt-N-Peppa “Push-It” and Funky Cold Medina, but these days on my runs I have actually been stuck on the Serial podcast. I’m totally hooked.

Q: Work out solo or buddy up?
A: I generally prefer working out solo to gather my thoughts. However these days I’m often seen working out with my little mini me in her jogging stroller. She is my workout partner and because I have included her in my workouts since she was very small. Now I can’t wait for the day she will be big enough to join me.

Q: Tell us something you’re passionate about.
A: Inspiring women. As a trainer, it is a passion of mine to help women work towards their fitness goals. We come in all types of shapes, sizes, ages, and abilities, and watching a woman gain confidence through living an active and healthy lifestyle is a wonderful transformation to witness. Shanna is equally passionate about empowering young girls through sports and character education.

Living by the motto, “How you play is how you live,” Shanna has integrated her roles as both a coach and mother to inspire young women, and encourage others on their fitness journey.
