Model-Athlete: Meet Wavemaster Gillian Gibree
Water sports athlete Gillian Gibree is making waves around the world. We caught up with the Massachusetts native to get the scoop on her stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) background and fitness favorites.
So your deep dive into water sports began with lifeguarding in Cape Cod. Tell us more about the journey.
I got hooked on SUP in 2007 while exploring the beautiful marshes of Cape Cod. I added my yoga practice to the paddleboard and realized the ocean provided the perfect healing environment.
How did you get into teaching SUP and competing?
I began teaching the sport to friends and family, and when I moved to San Diego, I started Paddle into Fitness. We started beginner lessons in 2009, and expanded up to Orange County within a year. Around the same time, I began working with companies such as Roxy and Ocean Minded as a professional ocean athlete, and got to travel the world to compete in different SUP events.
Do you have any fitness goals you’re working toward right now?
I’m getting back into SUP race shape! I took some time off competing, so now I’m working on getting that base back! My goals are mostly to be healthy and fit every day so I can free-dive, surf, downwind paddle, trail run, and teach SUP yoga.
What’s your go-to workout right now?
Stand-up paddleboarding. It’s an amazing fitness routine that’s fun and adventurous at the same time. Not only was it the perfect total body workout, but it’s low impact and beginner friendly. I love that it’s an all-inclusive sport.
Do you like to work out solo, or buddy up?

Are you a rise-and-shine-and-workout kind of girl or do you prefer training in the dark?
I’m a rise-and-shine kind of girl.
What’s the one item in your gym bag you can’t live without?
Well since I’m outdoors a lot – Raw Elements Sunscreen.

How do you like to relax?
Yin Yoga and Tea.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
South Africa. I love exploring new places and getting out to new environments to enjoy paddleboarding, as well as SUP surfing, river running, and freediving.
Where do you love to get away for the weekend?
Name your top three favorite foods.
Oysters, Green Juice, Sushi.
What is the coolest thing no one knows about you?
I used to lifeguard in New Zealand.
