Athleta Field Report: Testing Our Snowboarding Gear from the Slopes to the Chalet
Athleta Field Report puts our technology and innovations to the test in the real world. Pro snowboarder Caley Vanular reviews Athleta cold-weather performance gear on the top of Mt. Hood.
Mt. Hood boasts some of the most amazing ski and snowboard slopes in the Northwest. As a snowboarder, the slopes feel like a second home to me. There’s nothing quite like taking in the breathtaking view just before I glide down the mountain, it’s a feeling that never gets old.
Boulder Ski Jacket and Pant: Ultimate Insulation and Mobility
I suited up for the slopes with my Boulder Ski Jacket with the Boulder Ski Pants. The temperature dipped as I approached the mountain and reached a higher altitude. The jacket’s synthetic insulation kept me warm on the inside and the stretchy soft shell face on the outside made it easy to move around. Usually the first few minutes that I’m out there I’m freezing, but once adrenaline hits and I start moving around, it can get quite warm.
The jacket also features an awesome lift pass pocket for the RFID access card lift tickets on the top of the left arm so you don’t have to do the jacket wiggle to help the scanner find your pass, you can just wave your arm. Another pocket I loved was the media pocket which fit my phone real snug so I didn’t have to worry about dropping it off the lift when I grabbed it to snap pictures.
I paired my jacket with matching Boulder Ski Pants. These pants are totally tricked out with wind-resistant leg gaiters and guards to protect me from the wind and a ton of pockets. The best part is that they didn’t have that classic snowboard pant swoosh noise as I walked. The softshell fabric made it easy to walk around in and they transitioned easily from the slopes to the chalet for an aprés ski hangout with friends.
Tofino Boots by Sorel: Fashion Meets Function in Cold Weather Footwear
My Tofino boots by Sorel were perfect for keeping my toes toasty and dry while walking from the chalet to the slopes. The best part about these boots is that they are super stylish; I loved the faux fur trim and the sleek look of wax canvas and leather. They’re the perfect boots from trudging through the snow to kicking around town.
SuperLuxe Base Layers: My Secret Weapon
In the winter I live in long underwear, it is one of the most essential tools to having a good day on the slopes. Base layers are really like my secret weapon. The SuperLuxe Tight with the SuperLuxe Half Zip have regulating technology that accommodates my body’s changing temperatures, which is great when I’m headed back to the cabin and it’s too warm for a jacket but too cold for a light sweater.
Both pieces are seamless and made from uber soft material which is great because you never want to feel like you’re wearing a million layers, so it really did feel like second skin. It’s the kind of outfit you want to lounge in with a cup of hot cocoa after a long day of shredding the slopes.
Throughout the entire day I felt warm and dry in my base layers and outerwear. It stretched in all the right places to ensure I didn’t have any exposed skin or clothing restrictions while snowboarding and bending over to strap in my bindings. For someone who spends a lot of time on the hill, it’s important to me that my gear works as hard as I do, so I was impressed with how they kept up.
