A Santa Rosa native, ultra marathon runner – Julia Stamps Mallon started breaking national records at 16 and went on to become a 6-time All-American runner at Stanford. A proud mom of 2, it’s her love for ultra-marathons that has us cheering, but it’s her endless positivity that gets us inspired.

What’s your go-to workout right now?

My go to workout is Physical Therapy (PT)! I have come to realize that NO good athlete goes without an injury and my time was up for one. Getting off the trails is no fun but it makes me love it that much more. So PT is my go-to workout to get strong. Otherwise, my workouts lately have been 45 min swim, 60 min hard spin bike, 30 min stairmaster and 2 hours of strength and moving my leg for mobility.

Do you have any fitness goals you’re working toward?

Yes, to get back to the fitness I was in around December. I would love to run the North Face 50 again, but stay healthy. The best way to do that is keep up on the PT one day at a time.

Julia Run cropAre you a rise-and-shine-and-workout kind of girl or do you prefer training in the dark?

Rise – and – shine!! I have realized that if the workout doesn’t get done first thing in the morning than most likely it won’t get done at all! Besides – I love having my glass of wine towards the end of the day while hanging out with my two girls. Not to mention those last-minute dinners or get-togethers you didn’t plan for when you woke up. I also have been told that I am grouchy and impatient if its midday and I haven’t worked out all.

Where do you love to get away for the weekend?

When I am running I love to get away to ANY trails! Tahoe would be a place I love to go – The girls love to camp out and have a lazy day of Paddle boarding, kayaking, bike rides and hikes finished off with s’mores next to a fireplace. How can you not enjoy that? Another location would be our backyard that borders against a 5,000 acre state park. The day would start off with a run for me followed by hiking and a picnic with the girls.

  1. Sushi (any kind)
  2. Beets Salad
  3. Pancake Mornings after a hard workout

How do you like to relax?

Wow. That is a tough one for me as I find relaxation in a hard 20-miler run. A good friend told me to try meditation and do nothing for 10 minutes. It’s turned out to be a challenge…all I think about is what I should be doing vs. just relaxing. In fact, I challenge most of your readers to do it! I could use some motivation in keeping this up.

What’s the one item in your gym bag you can’t live without?

Lately, my waterproof iPod for swimming and my Athleta swim suit. Finally, a suit that looks good and is extremely functional for an athlete.

Name something you find utterly inspiring.

That is easy! I love watching first-time runners cross the finish line of a Half Marathon or Marathon. It can be people in their early 20s up to 70s. There is really nothing like it. You know it wasn’t just a day, but months of practicing and you see the joy in their eyes when they achieve the goal. It’s so inspiring.

Well, for one thing, I am not that cool. I’d love to be a bit more adventurous. At one point in my life I was certified to sky dive by myself. It wasn’t until I realized this involved jumping out of a perfectly good airplane that I might want to rethink the hobby.

If you could master anything, what would it be?

Patience – When we are always on the go and trying to maximize our day I have found that there are times I just need to chill out and smell the roses. I think our kids teach us this every day. However, with patience I can be a better listener, a better friend, a better teacher to my girls, and heck, probably learn something along the way!

FUN FACT: During our shoot, Julia was suffering from a torn ACL and yet braved it through every shot with a smile on her face. If that’s not a testament to her love of running, we don’t know what is.

Hi Ann, we apologize for the miscommunication on our part! We didn’t mean that the torn ACL is fun, but rather that we thought it was interesting to note that Julia was working on her physical therapy for an injury.

Yes – would love to know what kind of watch that is… believe I’ve seen it on other models / athletes in the catalog as well.

Looks like the watch is a Suunto, either the Ambit2 or Ambit3 model.

Her watch looks like my Suunto Ambit 2, a Garmin-type of device. $250-$400. Great for pace, distance, average pace, heartrate, etc.
