DON’T LOOK DOWN: Ice-Climbing 101

You know how people always say, “Don’t run with scissors”? Well, how about: “Don’t try to climb 100 feet of mountain while holding ax”? Not a phrase you’ve heard? That’s because the
people of Colorado would actually encourage you to do JUST THAT.

The little town of Ouray, Colorado—affectionately referred to as the “Switzerland of America”—maintains a year-round population of just 1000 people. Those 1000 people have a pretty cool
claim to fame, however: Ouray is America’s ice-climbing capital, and has built
the world’s first ice-climbing park.

The Ouray Ice Park contains dozens of frozen waterfalls from 70 to 200 feet high, from which you can appreciate stunning views of the Ucompahgre Gorge and San Juan Mountains. To take advantage of those waterfall-bound views, you only need to pick up an ax, and start climbing…

This is amazing! I love activities that take place outdoors (especially rock climbing). I’ve never tried ice climbing though… I’ll have to get out to Colorado to see the Ouray ice park!
