Downward Dog Anyone? Yoga in the Jungle!

Downward dog anyone? Let’s get our yoga on! Here at the Tailwind Jungle Lodge, Athleta girl Carri Uranga is hosting her first yoga teacher training with co-leader Sarah Walsh. This pair is truly a yoga dream team! Ready for a dose of jungle yoga inspiration?

Yoga Wisdom from the Jungle Dog

Jungle DogIn Carri’s yoga classes it’s clear that no matter whether you’re an advanced yogini or just a beginner, the basics of yoga always apply. In fact, Carri and I both agreed that basic yoga principles are such a fundamental part of a healthy lifestyle that even my yellow lab, Paris, has a wonderful yoga practice. Here are three yoga essentials that my “oh so wise” yellow lab would like to share.

Breathe. There’s nothing more satisfying then a breath that is so deep it shakes the jowls. Who cares if it makes you slobber? Deep breathing is one of the great pleasures of life and a fundamental part of any yoga practice. Breathe deeply and consistently throughout your yoga practice and take this with you throughout your daily life.

Stretch. Wherever, whenever, there’s always time for a good stretch. Downward dog, upward dog, child’s pose and dead bug (or happy baby) are some yellow lab favorites. Don’t be afraid to spread your legs or stick your butt up in the air, it’s natural!

Be here now. As soon as dawn breaks, the tail is wagging and the day is off to be a great start. Every day is an exciting new day! It doesn’t matter what happened yesterday, or what’s going to happen tomorrow. Let’s enjoy today! Which squirrel should I chase? When can we go to the beach? Life is so much fun, right now!

Start building your healthy yoga foundation with these simple techniques. Your body and mind will be grateful! Of course, don’t forget to build your nutritional foundation and taking care of yourself (check out my free guide to listening to your unique body).

Yoga Wisdom from Carri Uranga

Got the basics and ready to go deeper with your yoga practice? Carri Uranga can take you there. Carri has a genuine passion for life, adventure and yoga.

“Nice shorts” says Carri, “I have the same ones in red!” We laugh as we walk over to the jungle yoga platform. We’re both proudly sporting our stylish/comfortable/functional Athleta clothes. Our Athleta sponsorship is not the only thing we share; Carri is clearly an avid adventurer – prior to her arrival I was enthralled by the slew of worldly photos on her facebook page. Upon meeting her, I could tell by the look in her eye that she’s got some amazing stories to tell. The only problem is that she’s so busy living in the moment, and pursuing her next adventure that she doesn’t have time to share her wonderful stories. It’s truly beautiful to watch her soak in her surroundings as she thrives on natural nourishment in its many forms. Jungle Inspiration

On the mat, Carri brings a down to earth, no nonsense “yoga bootcamp” twist to her yoga teaching, as she gracefully breaks down the nuts and bolts of yoga practice. Her co-leader, Sarah, brings a more whimsical/philosophical approach to the yoga teacher training. Together, they offer a yoga teacher training that is truly a treat to the mind and body – both on and off the yoga mat. Yup, a yoga dream team! Check out this little video of Carri teaching in the jungle.

Before class one morning, I was lucky to enjoy a slice of Carri’s yoga wisdom. We’d been discussing adventure and the desire to continually go bigger, reach higher and dive into the next challenge. At one point she sighed and said, “You know, after years of going hard, and continually working on my goals, I suddenly realize that life is now and sometimes it’s okay to sit back and simply enjoy. Though I’m still working on a variety of big goals, I feel much calmer, happier and content to go with the flow.”  Her words have come back to me many times since then. Thanks Carri! It’s so important to remember that life is about the journey, not the destination.

Awesome article! I found myself agreeing on the points about it being okay to have larger goals, but that there is nothing wrong with relaxing and enjoying the present. it’s the present that we live in, and it’s easy to get absorbed in all the things to come, but it’s difficult to actually appreciate the exact moment of BEING, and LIVING. I love my sister lots, and am happy to see her put her knowledge, charisma, and positivity to good use! Great writing!
